Executive Producer: Deb Singleton (National Media Museum)

Saturday March 7th, 2015 - 10:00 p.m. at TOP KINO

This documentary is about one of the world's leading puppet making companies, founded by Ian Mackinnon and Peter Saunders in the UK in 1993, and facilitating feature films, children's programmes and art house shorts. The documentary features Tim Burton talking about the puppets made for his films, 'The Corpse Bride' and 'Frankenweenee'; Barry Purves, the studio's signature director, on his collaboration with the studio in custom-creating puppets for his short films ; and Mackinnon, Saunders and the studio staff themselves, demonstrating their work on shows like Bob the Builder and Frankenstein's Cat.

The documentary seeks to situate the studio's work within the broader traditions of the history of 3D stop motion animation; highlights the techniques and skills required in actually making puppets for animation; and celebrates Mackinnon & Saunders' achievements. Given full access to production over a year, the Animation Academy team were able to record all the processes involved in making their most recent series, 'Toby's Travelling Circus'.

The film is produced in collaboration with the Bradford Animation Festival at the National Media Museum, Bradford, as part of a series of films for the Association of British Animation Collections, dedicated to preserving and advancing British Animation heritage and legacy. Other films include 'Inside the Green Book', a documentary on Geoff Dunbar featuring Sir Paul McCartney; 'An Animated Utopia', a film about the achievements of John Halas of the Halas & Batchelor studio; and 'Whispers and Wererabbits', on producer Claire Jennings, with Nick Park and Henry Selick. All are written and directed by Professor Paul Wells and produced at the Animation Academy, Loughborough University, UK.
